And when those stories evolved to include female heroes, those women progressed from being “damsels in distress” to “heroines in peril.” And these is quite undeniable a sexual element to that peril. Creators can try to hide it (though many don’t bother) buy we all know what’s going on. A strong femal character struggling against imprisonment, bondage, or worse is a turn on, plain and simple. This is a place to strip away the veneer (no pun intended). This is place of peril parody, where the pretence is broken down to show what the creators are really selling.
